Post-Study Opportunities in Germany for International Students
Many international students choose Germany not only for its education system, but also for the career opportunities available after graduation.
Germany allows international graduates to stay in the country after completing their degree and look for work. This gives students the opportunity to gain professional experience and potentially build a long-term career in Germany.
In this guide, we explain the post-study work options available to international graduates, as well as the pathways to permanent residency in Germany.

Can International Students Stay in Germany After Graduation?
Yes. International students who complete a degree at a recognised German university can apply for a Job-Seeker Residence Permit.
This permit allows graduates to remain in Germany for up to: 18 months
During this period, graduates can search for a job related to their qualifications.
18-Month Job-Seeker Residence Permit
After graduation, international students can apply for a residence permit that allows them to stay in Germany while searching for employment.
During this period:
- Graduates can work in any job while searching for a qualified position
- The permit is valid for up to 18 months
- The permit cannot be extended
Once graduates find a suitable job related to their qualifications, they can switch to a work residence permit.
This system gives graduates enough time to enter the German job market.
Requirements for the Job-Seeker Residence Permit
Graduates normally need the following documents:
- Proof of graduation from a recognised German university
- Valid passport
- Proof of financial resources
- Valid health insurance
- Proof of residence in Germany
Applications are submitted to the local Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde).

This permit allows graduates to live and work in Germany long term.
- Typical requirements include:
- A valid employment contract
- A recognised university degree
- Health insurance
- Proof of residence in Germany
In many cases, the job should match the graduate’s qualifications or field of study.

The EU Blue Card offers several advantages.
Key benefits include:
- Residence permit valid for up to four years

- Spouses receive unrestricted work rights
- Faster pathway to permanent residency
To qualify, graduates must have a job offer that meets a minimum salary threshold.
As of 2025, the salary requirement is approximately: €48,300 per year
For shortage occupations such as IT, engineering, and healthcare, the required salary may be lower.
Permanent Residency in Germany
International graduates who work in Germany for several years may become eligible for permanent residency, known as a Settlement Permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis).
Permanent residency allows individuals to live and work in Germany without time restrictions.
Permanent Residency for EU Blue Card Holders
EU Blue Card holders may qualify for permanent residency faster than other workers.
Requirements generally include:
- At least 27 months of employment under an EU Blue Card
- Contributions to the German pension system
