If you're planning to study in the UK, it’s essential to understand the financial requirements for a UK Student Visa. Here’s what you need to know:
Proof of Funds for Course and Living Expenses
To apply for a UK Student Visa, you must show that you have enough money to cover:
-
Your tuition fees for one academic year, which will be noted on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
-
Living expenses for up to 9 months.
Living Expense Requirements Based on Location
-
In London: £1,334 per month (up to 9 months)
-
Outside London: £1,023 per month (up to 9 months)
Important Update: Starting 2 January 2025, these amounts will increase:
-
In London: £1,483 per month
-
Outside London: £1,136 per month
If you have a student loan or financial sponsorship, you’ll need to provide evidence of this from your loan or sponsorship company.
How Long You Must Hold These Funds
You must have these funds available in your account for 28 consecutive days. The last day of this 28-day period should be within 31 days of your visa application date.
When You Do NOT Need to Show Financial Proof
You’re exempt from proving financial support if:
-
You’ve already been in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months at the time of your Student Visa application.
-
You’re applying as a postgraduate doctor or dentist on a foundation programme.
-
You’re from a country under the ‘differential evidence requirement’, which includes Australia, Canada, the UAE, the USA, and many others. (See the full list of qualifying countries here)
