Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) Guide
If you’re planning to study in the UK, you will hear this word many times: CAS
It stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies.
Without a CAS number, you cannot apply for a UK Student Visa.
- But what exactly is it?
- When do you receive it?
- What should you check before using it?
This guide explains everything in simple terms.

What Is a CAS?
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is an electronic document issued by your UK university.
It confirms that:
- You have accepted an offer
- You meet the course requirements
- You are eligible to apply for a Student Visa
It contains a unique CAS number, which you must enter in your UK visa application.
Is CAS a Physical Document?
No.
CAS is not usually a printed certificate.
You will receive:
- A CAS statement by email
- A CAS number
The UK Home Office can view the details electronically.
When Do You Receive Your CAS?
Most universities issue a CAS after:
✔ You accept your offer
✔ You pay your deposit (if required)
✔ You submit required documents
✔ You show valid proof of funds
✔ You meet academic and English requirements
Some universities also ask you to complete a CAS request form.
Important: CAS is usually issued 3–4 months before your course starts.
What Information Is Included in a CAS?
Your CAS typically includes:
- Your full name (as per passport)
- Passport number
- Course title
- Course level (e.g. Master’s)
- Course start and end dates
- Tuition fees
- Deposit paid
- English qualification
- Sponsor details (if any)
You must check this carefully.
Sample CAS Statement (Example Layout)
To help you understand what a real Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies looks like, we’ve included a redacted sample below.
Please note: CAS statements can look different from one university to another.
The layout, formatting, and design may vary. Some universities provide a detailed multi-page document, while others send a simpler summary format by email.
However, the key information included will usually be similar.
As you review the example, focus on the important details rather than the design:
- Full name (exactly as in your passport)
- Passport number
- Course title and qualification level
- Course start and end dates
- Tuition fees
- Deposit paid
- English language qualification
- Sponsor information (if applicable)
Even if your CAS looks different from this sample, these core details should be accurate.
Before submitting your visa application, compare your own CAS carefully and check every detail.
If anything appears incorrect, contact your university’s admissions or CAS team immediately. It is always easier to fix an issue before applying for your visa.

What Happens If Your CAS Has an Error?
Do not apply with incorrect details.
Email the university’s admissions or CAS team and request correction.
It is easier to fix before applying than after visa refusal.
How Long Is a CAS Valid?
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is valid for 6 months from the date it is issued.
You must use your CAS number within this period when applying for your UK Student visa.
Important:
- A CAS can only be used once.
- If it expires before you apply, your university will need to issue a new one.
- If your visa is refused, you cannot reuse the same CAS.
Because visa timelines can vary depending on whether you are applying from inside or outside the UK, always check your visa timing carefully before submitting your application.
If you are unsure about your timeline, it’s best to confirm with your university or seek guidance before proceeding.
Does a CAS Guarantee a Visa?
No.
A CAS allows you to apply for a visa.
Your visa is approved only if:
- Your financial documents meet UKVI rules
- Your documents are correct
- You meet all requirements
That’s why checking your CAS and documents is important.
What if my CAS is delayed?
Universities may delay CAS if:
- Documents are incomplete
- Funds are unclear
- Deadlines are near
Contact the university and check regularly.
Can I change university after getting a CAS?
If you change your university, you will need a new CAS.
