Do You Need a Student Visa for Germany?

If you are a non-EU/EEA student and your course lasts more than 90 days, you will usually need a German national visa (D visa).

Some students from countries like Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the UK can enter Germany without a visa, but must apply for a residence permit after arrival.

Always check the German embassy website in your country for confirmation.

Types of German Study Visas

Student Visa (Visum zu Studienzwecken)

This is the most common visa type.

It is for students who already have:

  • An official admission letter
  • Or confirmed enrolment

It is usually issued for 3 to 6 months initially.
After arriving in Germany, you must apply for a residence permit.

Prospective Student Visa (Visum zur Studienbewerbung)

This visa is for students who:

  • Need to enter Germany to attend interviews
  • Take entrance exams
  • Finalise admission

It is valid for up to 3 months and may be extended.

It cannot automatically be converted into a student visa. A residence permit application is required after admission.

Language Course Visa (Sprachkursvisum)

This visa is for students attending an intensive German language course.

It cannot be converted into a student visa later. Students must return home and reapply.
