The UK government has announced upcoming changes to the Graduate route, which allows international students to stay and work in the UK after completing their studies.
From 1 January 2027, the length of stay granted under this route will change for some applicants. These updates were outlined in the Immigration White Paper released in May 2025 and confirmed in the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules, published on 14 October 2025.
What’s changing and who it affects
From January 2027, graduates who have completed an eligible UK bachelor’s degree or master’s degree and apply under the Graduate route will receive 18 months of permission to stay in the UK - a reduction from the current two years.
This change will only apply to applications made on or after 1 January 2027.
Anyone who applies before that date will still receive the current two-year grant of permission.
Who is not affected
Graduates who successfully complete a PhD or other doctoral qualification will remain unaffected by this change. They will continue to be granted three years of permission under the Graduate route.
What this means for students
The Graduate route has been a popular option for international students who wish to gain UK work experience after their studies. With this upcoming change, future applicants - particularly those completing bachelor’s or master’s degrees in 2027 and beyond - should plan their timelines carefully if they wish to benefit from the current two-year post-study work period.
Students who will complete their studies before January 2027 may still be eligible to apply under the existing two-year rule, as long as they submit their Graduate route application before 1 January 2027.
